Welcome to Spark in Words, we’re really excited to have you, even though you may not be all that excited to have us. Chances are you started reading this blog because you’re either fighting cancer, you’re taking care of a loved one with cancer or you’re just getting out of a battle with cancer. Well…rest assured, you’re at the absolute best place you can be in this hard time in your life and we’re committed to you and your victory during your cancer season.
Now, for a more personal welcome, my name’s Maddie Miller and I’m truly honored to be writing to you! I want you to know that I understand where you’re at and it’s my mission to help you through it. In hopes of gaining your trust, I feel like I should tell you some kinda important things about myself and the start of Spark the Way.
I graduated from high school in 2011 and in 2013, my grandpa was diagnosed with cancer. Mind you…my grandpa was the man at every sports game, awards ceremony and life event since I was born; he was the one I planned on walking me down the aisle one day. Grandpa fought for a few months before the cancer became too much, and he passed away. During his fight, I started a fight of my own- a battle with lymphoma. A year of chemotherapy at Moffitt Cancer Center and radiation at Countryside Radiology in Florida helped my ability to claim remission on February 5, 2014. And thankfully, I’ve stayed in remission since.
Supporter (I wouldn’t say I was caregiver). Fighter. Survivor- all 3 platforms. And I know there’s a lot of young adults out there who are with me on this, who have lived or are currently living these three uncomfortable lifestyles. That last paragraph is missing about a novel-size portion of the story, but those are the facts and we’ll save the rest for later. This is about YOU. Obviously, I don’t know you. I have no idea which category you fit into, if not all. But I do need you to know that I understand and that I care for you and love you. How do I love someone I don’t know? Because I follow Jesus and He loved the whole world, so I like to follow his example. I feel like he did a good job at life…
So, with this love I have for you, the selfless compassion of a really cool group of friends and a loud calling from God, we introduce to you Spark the Way. A nonprofit that exists to spark faith, light and unity in young adults affected by cancer. We’re devoted to you and your victory and to your ability to be light-bearing and fearless throughout this cancer season (that you still find yourself shocked that you’re stuck in).
One of the ways we plan to light up this darkness is through this blog. It’s obvious that there are a lot of blogs out there for people with regular lifestyles, but neither you or I live one of those. This lifestyle you’re living now is one that will end in empowerment, new perceptions and a greater fire for life, and we post to bring light until that day comes!
This blog was created specifically for you, so we took a step back and looked at all of the struggles that may pop up in you cancer fight, survivor life or caretaker season- from cancer prevention to physical and emotional trauma to the more simple explanations of your medical questions, we aim to speak to them all. Cancer is something that seemed to be formatted and structured without young adults in mind. And we plan to reinvent the wheel. Stick with us as we Spark the Way through your cancer season and lookout for our second post coming your way this week!
I’ll never end a post without a challenge or Bible verse, but never feel pressured to take the challenge or read the verse…how would I know anyways…
Challenge to all YA’s affected by cancer: Dream up something cool, something big to do after this season of your life is over. Feel free to email your plan over to YourFriends@SparktheWay.org or drop it in our facebook inbox for us to share with the community!
Verse: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
Bonus Challenge: Pray…tell God what you need then
thank Him for what He’s already given to and done for you!
